Partnering with Texas Tech University’s Senior Landscape Architecture Studio

Over the past few months, Norris Design had the pleasure of collaborating with Texas Tech University’s Senior Landscape Architecture Studio on a theoretical redesign project for Gates Crescent Park and Fishback Park near downtown Denver. Led by Professor Andrew Castilleja and Danielle Craig, the senior class explored opportunities to better connect these park spaces with the South Platte River, encourage activation, and integrate with the future River Mile development.

The collaboration began in August with a site visit, during which the class met with local stakeholders, toured the project area, and visited our Denver office. Afterward, the students worked in teams to analyze the site, engage with professionals from Norris Design and the City and County of Denver, and craft innovative design concepts that emphasized placemaking and community connection.

The process culminated last week with final presentations in Lubbock, Texas, where a representative from Norris Design participated and celebrated the students’ hard work. Their designs showcased creative solutions and thoughtful integration of stakeholder goals, environmental considerations, and user experience.

We’re especially proud to recognize three of our 2023 summer interns—Anissa Cantu, Giselle Ashton, and Taylor Wilbanks—who were part of this talented studio. It’s inspiring to see their continued growth and dedication to the profession.

This collaboration underscores the value of partnerships between academia and practice, and we’re excited to see how these future landscape architects shape the field in the years to come.
